Thanks to a very very (extremely) kind professor (I think he prefers to remain anonymous), I got a Spartan D2E FPGA board complete with a DIO1 board. I am thankful for my professor's generosity and I will never be able to thank him enough.

What's a FPGA? It looks like a bomb.
A field programmable gate array (FPGA) is a device containing programmable logic components. They can be programmed to duplicate the functionality of combinational logic circuits. -Wikipedia
In short, it is a chip that can be programmed to quickly implement digital circuits.
